The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest housestaff union in the United States, representing over 16,000 resident physicians and fellows across the country. CIR is a local chapter of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). States with represented housestaff include Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington D.C., and California. Although CIR has been representing residents and fellows at Harbor-UCLA for years, the Westwood UCLA campus has not historically been represented. UCLA residents and fellows organized to file for recognition on June 8, 2018 after months of organizing.
